But you cannot see Everest from the base camp, so most trekkers climb Kala Pattar, an unassuming 5545-metre bump on the southern flank of Pumori (7145 metres).

Other than the problem of access, the other major complication to an Everest trek is the high likelihood of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). This potentially deadly disease, commonly known as altitude sickness, is caused by climbing too quickly to a high elevation. If you suffer symptoms of altitude sickness and cannot go to base camp, you can still make a worthwhile trek to less ambitious destinations such as Namche Bazaar, the administrative headquarters of the Khumbu region; Khumjung or Thami, more typical Sherpa villages; or Tengpoche Monastery. From Tengpoche you will have an excellent view of Everest and its more spectacular neighboour Ama Dablam (6856 metres).

, where would you begin your research? I’m guessing you’ve said Google. There is little doubt that Google is the 800 lbs gorilla of search engines – by far one of the most popular and most used web sites worldwide. It’s time for you, as a home based business owner, to fully embrace Google and use what is commonly referred to as the greatest marketing and advertising tool ever created: AdWords.

There are many, many wonderful resources that have been written and published on Google AdWords best practices. So, I am not going to reinvent the wheel in this article. What I would like to do is discuss a number of the AdWords idiosyncrasies I’ve discovered on my own that I have not seen discussed in any other article. These are just things you should be aware of and keep in mind when setting up an AdWords account of your own.

Firstly, I’d just like to mention that becoming proficient in Google AdWords is very similar to becoming a good auto mechanic – you can read all the books and articles you want on AdWords but you’re never going to really learn it or become proficient at it until you roll up your sleeves and get your “hands dirty”.

In the same way a mechanic may have attended school and has read many books on the subject of cars and engines, he’s not an actual mechanic until he gets his hands dirty and actually works on an automobile.

Having said that, here are 4 things I’ve discovered about AdWords only after I’d started using it:

1) Google will not allow “non-standard punctuation” in any of your ads. Non-standard punctuation is described as: tilde (~), asterisk (*) or pipe (|). The funny thing is though, I found this out when I ran an ad that did not contain any of these elements. The ad I tried to run had a headline which read: “Lost Job? So What!”

Although I was not able to see how or where a question mark or exclamation point would be considered “Non-standard punctuation”, I had to change the exclamation point to a period for the ad to be accepted. I’m pretty sure I’ve even seen this exact punctuation in other ads in the past. But, Google occasionally changes their rules so you just need to make sure you’re always operating within acceptable AdWords parameters.

2) Google will not allow excessive punctuation such as multiple exclamation points (!!!). I ran an ad one time with a point I wanted to place great emphasis on and chose to do so with three exclamation points. Doing so violated an AdWords policy and I had to change my ad to reflect a single exclamation point.

3) Including a direct call to action within your ad is a no-no. Statements such as “click here” or “go there now” are not allowed in your ads. You can work around this one by saying something like “details on next page” within the advertisement.

4) When setting up your ad, you will enter both a display web address and a destination web address. The Google user will not see the destination address, they will only see the display web address in your ad. The destination address is where the user will be taken if they click on your link. The display web address must be an actual, working web address.

This may make loads of sense on the surface. After all, why would you ever want to display anything BUT a working web address? Well, consider this: I have a web site I was promoting in one of my AdWords accounts. The actual web address being promoted is but, I chose to hyphenate the displayed address just to make it easier for the user to read. I figured it was easier to read. Of course, in the event my link was clicked on, the user would’ve been taken to my real web site (address without the hyphen). That all kinda makes sense, doesn’t it?

But, because my actual site address is not hyphenated the ad was rejected. Instead I wanted it to display but Google found this to be unacceptable.

The above are only a few examples of the things I’d learned about Google AdWords that only experience had taught me. That is what I meant when I said earlier that you will only become really proficient with AdWords after you begin using it.

I am sure there may be many other nuances of AdWords that I am not yet familiar with that I’ll discover over time. Plus, Google changes their rules and requirements from time to time so what was OK yesterday may not necessarily be so today.

Setting up a really effective, hard hitting AdWords campaign is as much an art as it is a science. Ongoing education, use and discovery are what I’ve found to be three key components to effectively using my Google AdWords account.

For those who may be intimidated or overwhelmed by it all, you may want to work with a Google AdWords consultant to help you to set up your first account. Consultants offer experience based on a mixture of research, training and, most important, real-world, hands-on experience. Do you know how to tell if an ad has any chance of working before you run it?

Any good ad has four components and how well you do each of them will determine how your ad it will work. Ask yourself these questions:

!b>1. DOES IT HAVE AN EFFECTIVE HEADLINE?

An effective headline is one that grabs your prospect’s attention and forces him to read further. As copywriters say, the job of a headline is to get the reader to read the next sentence. If you pay for your advertising with your own money, the headline of this article, "Do Your Ads Suck?" or a headline like "How to tell if an ad will work before you run it" should get your attention.

Headlines like a company name, a meaningless platitude, or no headline at all will not grab the reader’s attention. You may think your company name makes a cool headline, but your reader wants to know WIFM (what’s in it for me?). They don’t care about your company at all, only about what you can do for them.

2. DOES YOUR SUB-HEAD OR FIRST SENTENCE PROMISE THEY WILL LEARN SOMETHING OF VALUE IF THEY KEEP READING YOUR AD?

If not, you'll lose them right away. Why should I read your ad if all it’s talking about is you, your company, how long you’ve been in business, or how successful you were last year. I don’t care. Like I said before, "what’s in it for me?" If you don’t tell me right away, I’m gone.

An example of doing it right is the first sentence of this article. If it's YOUR money paying for your advertising, the headline "Do Your Ads Suck?" should get your attention. If however, the next sentence started off talking about my company and how good we are, you’re gone. On the other hand, asking the question: "Do you know how to tell if an ad has any chance of working before you run it?" promises that if you keep reading you will find out.

3. DOES YOUR AD HELP YOUR READER DECIDE HOW TO BUY WHATEVER IT IS YOU SELL?

Or Is it full of platitudes like "best price", "best service", "in business since 1910", "family owned business", and so on. Platitudes are statements that mean nothing because everyone says them all the time. You see this in the Yellow Pages all the time. All the ads look the same and say the same things.

Though this article is not an ad, look at the structure. I tell you that there are 4 components of a good ad and then I explain what they are and how to tell if your ad is doing them right. This is helpful information if you are paying good money to run ads and care how they work.

4. DO YOU HAVE AN OFFER?

What I mean is: do you have an offer in your ad for further information, a special deal, or some other reason to cause the reader to want to take action right now? Most ads don’t have any offer at all, and some have the weakest offer of all - a phone number.
That excites me. If I want to know about your service, the last thing I want to do is call and get hit on by a salesperson. I just want some information so I can tell if I’m even interested in what you sell.

A good ad captures both the people who are ready to buy now and also those who are interested but not ready to buy today. You put those prospects into your "drip" system and contact them over time with helpful information until they are ready to buy. If you have helped them along the way to learn what they need to know, odds are that when they are ready to buy they will pick you.

A 15 SECOND AD EVALUATION

One quick way to know in a few seconds if an ad is any good is to ask this one question: "If I put my competitors name in my ad, would everything else in the ad still be accurate?" If so, that means your ad is giving your prospect NO reason whatsoever to buy from you except that you exist.

It’s pretty clear if the ad is accurate for you or your competitor, then you are the same, neither one any better than the other, and the only criteria your customer has left to use to decide is price.
